Newspaper Details

The Press's home market is Christchurch, where it enjoys a strong market penetration of 74%.
Outside of Greater Christchurch it also enjoys significant strength in the immediate Canterbury region which boasts two of the five fastest growing districts in New Zealand, Selwyn and Waimakariri. The Press also enjoys strong daily circulation into Nelson, Marlborough, the West Coast, Ashburton, Timaru, Wanaka and Queenstown regions.
Each day The Press provides more than local, regional, national, and international news. It has regular daily, weekly or monthly features, delivered free with the newspaper, that allow the advertiser to target their specific consumer market.
Christchurch and the Canterbury province is the most heavily populated area of the South Island. It is known for its diversity of business from a very strong rural and agricultural sector, a significant manufacturing and export base and a burgeoning IT software and computer industry. Christchurch International Airport serves as the gateway to the South Island where tourism is one of the largest economic contributor to the Christchurch / South Island economy.
As the daily newspaper The Press prides itself on its penetration level within Christchurch, the Canterbury region and throughout the South Island. The Press delivers a cumulative weekly audience of 365,000 people and over 7 out of 10 Christchurch residents turn to the paper at least once each week. Core to achieving this penetration is the very popular bumper Weekend Press in which 32% of all South Islanders regularly turn to. Across the week almost half the people in the South Island read at least one issue of The Press per week. Looking at the immediate Christchurch urban area, The Press reaches 74% of all people aged 15+.
The structure of the paper (Monday - Friday ) is a two - section format together with a daily tabloid section. The Weekend Press contains no less than 9 Sections including extended Business coverage, Feature Sections, and extensive Classified Sections for Automotive, Employment, Property and General Classifieds.

Advertorials
The Press does not publish advertorials however we do accept reader advertisements providing they adhere to the following requirements;
- Must be fully boarded - minimum 4 pt boarder.
-
The word "advertisement" must appear top centre of the advertisement in minimum 12 pt bold font. The word must appear in a clear unobstructed format and cannot be included within a graphic, in colour or surrounded with other wording.
-
Although serif fonts are acceptable for body copy, the font used cannot be the same as used by The Press. Similarly headlines cannot be similar to that of the main editorial headlines.
-
Reader ads cannot appear within the first 5 pages of Section A Monday - Friday and the first 9 pages on Saturday. Opinion, Perspective pages and section front positions are also excluded.
- The style and look of a Press advertising feature also cannot be replicated.
Additional requirements for full page reader ads:
- The word "advertisement" must be centred and in minimum 14 pt bold font unobstructed, and must be fully bordered (min 4 pt rule) as above.
- Full page reader advertisements cannot appear anywhere within the general News section of Section A. They may appear on the "transition" page between News and Business or in Business, but only on a left hand page.
General Guidelines:
- All reader advertisements must be approved by the Advertising Manager and / or Deputy prior to publication.
- All reader advertisements must be supplied for approval by noon one working day prior.
- The Press may decline a reader advertisement from being published even if the requirements described above are technically met. This may occur where the overall impression of the advertisement has the strong potential to confuse readers, or even more critically, where some readers may think there was a deliberate attempt to mislead and deceive them into thinking what is presented is genuine editorial coverage.
The Press provides advertisers with a wide range of advertising options from run on style liner advertisements through to full pages. The Press commissioned a brand new printing press in August 2009, among the efficiencies gained is full colour to every page.
There are separate advertising rate cards for Display and Classified advertising. There are also separate rate cards for Direct business and for Advertising Agencies where a commission is paid. The Display advertising rates are priced inclusive of colour whereas some of the Classified rates are expressed as black and white only.
There are differential rates on the off peak days of Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with higher rates on both Wednesdays and Saturdays. This reflects the increase in advertising demand and readership delivered on these 2 key days.
To make calculation easier, the rate cards list specific positions with the appropriate column centimetre rates. To calculate the cost of advertisement multiply the depth of the advertisement by the width of advertisement (no. of columns) by the appropriate rate. Eg; 20 cm x 3 columns x $17.97 = $1078.20. All rates are exclusive of GST.
